This image was originally a black and white photograph of my mother on her fourth birthday. To begin with I first opened the image in Camera Raw and cropped the image in order to remove edges from the original image and the excess from the scanner. I then took the image into Photoshop and removed small blemishes and scratches from the image using the clone stamp tool. I started adding color by selecting around the cake area with the quick select tool then I inversed my selection and clicked on the quick mask. I finished selecting the rest of the cake with a hard edge brush in quick mask. Once it was all selected, I colored the selection a rich pink with the same paint brush tool. I then applied the blending layer to color. I did this for the rest of the image though occasionally switching between soft light, hard light, and color. I also played with the softness of the edge and paint brush flow around the hair line, in order to not create a harsh line between the skin and hair.
